Johannes Gutfleisch
Drummer, Sideman, Bandleader, Teacher, Composer​

Johannes Gutfleisch has been active in the Swiss and southern German music scene for 20 years. He is appreciated for his profound musical skills and stylistic versatility in jazz, funk, Latin, and fusion.
​
Coming from a musical family, he began learning piano, trumpet, and drums at an early age. He took drum lessons at the Drumschool and Jazzschule Basel and later studied at the Swiss Jazz School in Bern with Billy Brooks, Andy Scherrer, Joe Haider, and Frank Sikora. There, he performed with the Swiss Jazz School Big Band at the jazz festivals in Bern, Cully, and Montreux. During several extended stays in New York, he further deepened his studies with Gregory Hutchinson, Ari Hoenig, Kenny Washington, Jochen Rückert, and others.

As a versatile sideman, he held a regular gig for some time at the Hammond Jazz Night in Freiburg (Germany), where he performed with guests like Adrian Mears, Axel Fischbacher, Cecil Verny, Domenic Landolf, Thomas Bauser, and many others. This led to various collaborations and formations such as the Jürgen Hagenlocher Organ Trio, the Ismael Rheinhardt Trio, and many years of performing with Michael Heitzler’s Klezmer & Wedding Band. He played Latin jazz with Gutfleisch-Koch-Pellet, Trio Igarapé and Rodrigo Botter-Maio’s Jazz via Brasil, salsa with the band K’aliche. For many years, he has also been a member of Playin’ Tachles (klezmer, jazz, world music), Upgrade Partyband (Top 40), and The Daschenka Project (funk, groove), and he played for 20 years with the dance orchestra The Moody Tunes.

He fulfilled his long-cherished wish to compose and perform his own songs again during the lockdown, and at the end of 2022 Johannes & Christian founded the band Gutfleisch Brothers. They play exclusively their own material and made recordings in October 2025 for their first production, which will be released in November 2026.​​

​At the Laufental - Thierstein (CH) music school he has long been a teacher of drum set, Latin percussion & ensembles and leads a jazz workshop at various locations in the canton of Basel Land.​
